چکیده

In this paper we describe object selection techniques and metaphors for virtual environments (VEs). By combining and extending known techniques, we introduce an improved virtual pointer metaphor which enhances interactive object selection. The extension of the virtual pointer metaphor is based on a bendable ray, which is visualized by a quadratic beziér curve and points to the selectable object closest to the additionally visualized direction ray of the pointer. Strategies for determining this object are discussed and compared.

Multimodal Interaction Metaphors for Manipulation of Distant Objects in Immersive Virtual Environments

In this paper we discuss direct interaction metaphors for selection and manipulation of distant objects in immersive virtual environments and we propose extensions of the improved virtual pointer (IVP) metaphor. In particular, we describe how the process of object selection with the IVP metaphor can be enhanced by modifying the distance calculation used to determine the closest object to be sel...

Evaluation of Pointing Techniques for Ray Casting Selection in Virtual Environments

Various techniques for object selection in virtual environments have been proposed over the years. Among them, the virtual pointer or ray-casting is one of the most popular method because it is easy and intuitive to use and allows the user to select objects that are far away. Variants of the virtual pointer metaphor include the Aperture [5], Flashlight [3], and Image plane method [1] as categor...

Exploring Multimodal 3D Interfaces

The Virtual Reality Lab at the Naval Research Laboratory has created a real-time, situational awareness virtual environment for battlefield visualization, termed the Dragon System [1]. The system is implemented on a workbench [2] and a CAVE-like immersive room [3]. It utilizes a virtual laser pointer metaphor for navigating and interacting with the terrain and objects; we implemented this metap...

A study of techniques for selecting and positioning objects in immersive VEs: effects of distance, size, and visual feedback

We present results of a formal evaluation of three direct manipulation interaction techniques for picking and positioning objects in VEs: the “classical” virtual hand, raycasting, and the Go-Go techniques. Our goal was to assess and compare the two most basic metaphors for selection and manipulation in VEs: virtual pointer and virtual hand. The main variables of interest were distance to and si...

Egocentric Object Manipulation in Virtual Environments: Empirical Evaluation of Interaction Techniques

The acceptance of virtual environment (VE) technology requires scrupulous optimization of the most basic interactions in order to maximize user performance and provide efficient and enjoyable virtual interfaces. Motivated by insufficient understanding of the human factors design implications of interaction techniques and tools for virtual interfaces, this paper presents results of a formal stud...
